Lia Nizen is a spoken word poet out of Wilmington, NC. She is a full-time college student studying psychology, creative writing, and education. She works as a substitute teacher, and a CNA doing home care for elderly and disabled members of her community. Lia has loved poetry since she learned how to write.
Lia fell in love with spoken word poetry and has studied poetry structures and styles ever since. She draws inspiration from modern day slam poets such as: Andrea Gibson, Blythe Baird, Neil Hilborn, Tara Hardy, Nikita Gill, and Iain S. Thomas. Her favorite traditional poets include Sylvia Plath and W. H. Auden.
As a disabled woman, Lia is a passionate advocate in the disability and chronically ill communities and her work often explores the challenges and stigma faced while living with chronic illness and/or mental illness. When Lia isn’t writing, performing, working, or studying, you can find her training with her service dog, Irie, or nestled in a hammock at the beach! Today, Lia teaches an online writing workshop called Metanoia, which has curated a beautiful community of writers from all walks of life.
